Night Life – Tawny Owl and the Durrow Cross, Ireland

I needed a context for this owl, and after visiting Ireland during May I wanted to paint a Celtic Cross.   The 9th century Celtic Durrow Cross made a fascinating though difficult subject, as a thousand years outside in all weathers made some of the carving difficult to make out.  It Is now safely housed inside St Columba’s Church in Durrow.  I thought it would add interest (and double as a handy perch).  Wild dog-roses were in full bloom in the hedgerows.
